ABOUT

b. 1986, HK.

3 life experiences that made me the Art Director I am today:

  1. When I was born, my dad wanted to name me ‘Azaria Samantha Spellman’, 'Azaria' after the famous story of an Australian baby who was eaten by a dingo (yes, really). He settled for Samantha Azaria Spellman (thanks, Mom). This taught me that the order of how you say things matters, even when it comes to something as small as initials... and not to take a baby camping in the Outback.

  2. In kindergarten, my art teacher told me that the high-school Spanish teacher loved my self-portrait of me eating watermelon so much, she had to have it. At the time, I believed it stood out among 50+ other students' artwork hanging in the cafeteria art gallery and happily agreed to repaint a second one for her to grade. Years later, I realized that an angsty teen likely ripped it down. This taught me to have humility in my work and that practice makes perfect.

  3. I once unknowingly snuck Noah Schnapp, the actor who plays Will in Stranger Things, into Dave & Buster's while on a date. After watching multiple overly excited moms and grown men take pictures with a 15-year-old, I finally asked him who he was. This taught me to keep up with current trends and pop culture… and that NYC Tinder dates are not for me.
